Beyond, Inc., dba Bed, Bath & Beyond and Overstock.com, Settles For $13,485
In June 2025, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) reached a settlement with Beyond, Inc., dba Bed, Bath & Beyond and Overstock.com (Beyond, Inc.), with its principal location in Murray, Utah for the company’s violation of the Regulation for Limiting Ozone Emissions from Indoor Air Cleaning Devices (Indoor ACD Regulation), under California Code of Regulations, title 17, section 94800 et seq.
An investigation conducted by CARB staff revealed and documented that Beyond, Inc. violated the Indoor ACD Regulation because they sold, supplied, offered for sale, and introduced into commerce in California, indoor air cleaning devices that were not certified by CARB. Indoor air cleaners are subject to an ozone emission concentration limit of 0.050 parts per million (ppm) and are required to be certified prior to selling in California. Additionally, Beyond, Inc. failed to include a statement excluding sales to California on webpages advertising uncertified indoor air cleaners.
To come into compliance, Beyond, Inc. stopped the sale of uncertified indoor air cleaners in California and placed a statement excluding California sales on their website. Beyond, Inc. fully cooperated with CARB toward resolution in this matter. The total penalty amount of $13,485 will be deposited into CARB’s Air Pollution Control Fund, which provides funding for projects and research to improve California's air quality.
