Amazon Logistics, Inc. Settles For $3,200,000
In December 2024, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) reached a settlement with Amazon Logistics, Inc. (Amazon), with its principal location in Seattle, Washington, for the company’s violation of CARB’s Regulation to Reduce Emissions of Diesel Particulate Matter, Oxides of Nitrogen and Other Criteria Pollutants, from In-Use Heavy-Duty Diesel-Fueled Vehicles (Truck and Bus Regulation), as codified in the California Code of Regulations, title 13, section 2025, subd. (2). Amazon disclosed to CARB facts that CARB determined were violations of the Truck and Bus Regulation requiring hiring entities to verify compliance of the trucks being hired. Amazon quickly took proactive action to mitigate the violations.
To settle the case, Amazon agreed to pay the settlement amount of $3,200,000. Of this amount, $1,600,000 in civil penalty will be deposited into CARB’s Air Pollution Control Fund, which provides funding for projects and research to improve California's air quality. The remaining $1,600,000 will fund a Supplemental Environment Project (SEP) entitled, El Sol Environmental Community Health Worker Learning HUB, with the El Sol Neighborhood Educational Center. This SEP provides the El Sol Neighborhood Educational Center with funds to expand the capabilities of a digital platform identified as the Environmental Community Health Workers (CHWs) Learning Hub. The Hub’s goal is to provide additional resources and knowledge to CHWs and community-based organizations to in turn share these with their communities.
