American Honda Motor Co., Inc. Settles For $159,600
In May 2024, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) reached a settlement with American Honda Motor Co., Inc. (Honda), with its principal location in Torrance, California, for violating the Exhaust Emission Regulation and the Small Off-Road Engines (SORE) Regulation, as codified in the California Code of Regulations, title 13, sections 2400-2409.
A CARB investigation revealed that Honda failed to comply with the requirements of the Exhaust Emission Regulation and SORE Regulation due to failure in meeting certification requirements and failure to obtain an Executive Order. CARB documented violations relating to the Exhaust Emission Requirements for Small Off-Road Equipment Regulation (Cal. Code Regs., tit. 13, § 2400-2409). To settle the case, Honda agreed to a penalty of approximately $638.40 per Small Off-Road Engine violation totaling $159,600.
As part of the settlement, Honda is obligated to fulfill specific compliance measures for the engines impacted by this agreement. Of the total amount, $79,800 will be deposited into CARB’s Air Pollution Control Fund, which provides funding for projects and research to improve California’s air quality. The remaining amount of $79,800 will fund a Supplemental Environment Project (SEP), specifically the Residential Air Filtration Program’ by the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District.
This settlement continues ongoing compliance efforts between Honda and CARB, following previous agreements in August 2023, December 2021, and April 2020.
