S.C Johnson and Son, Inc. Settles For $3,000
In December 2023, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and S.C. Johnson and Son, Inc. (SCJ) of Racine, Wisconsin reached a settlement for SCJ’s violation of CARB’s Regulation for Reducing Emissions from Consumer Products (Consumer Products Regulation), as specified in California Code of Regulations, title 17, sections 94507 et seq.
An investigation by CARB staff revealed that SCJ sold, supplied, and offered for sale in California, nonaerosol general purpose cleaner products that were not in compliance with CARB’s Consumer Products Regulations. The Mrs. Meyers Clean Day Vinegar Gel contained concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that exceeded the standards specified in the California Code of Regulations, title 17, section 94509(a). The violation contributed to 0.06 tons of excess VOC emissions in the General Purpose Cleaner (nonaerosol) category over a period of three years.
SCJ fully cooperated with CARB to resolve this matter and immediately ceased sales of the Mrs. Meyers Clean Day Vinegar Gel upon being notified of the alleged violation. In order to comply with the California Consumer Products Regulation, SCJ will not be advertising nor selling the Mrs. Meyers Clean Day Vinegar Gel as a general purpose cleaning product. The full penalty amount will be deposited into CARB’s Air Pollution Control Fund, which provides funding for projects and research to improve California's air quality.
