Featured Supplemental Environmental Project
Community Science
Since 2017, the California Air Resources Board Supplemental Environmental Projects Program has provided approximately $47.9 million in funding towards community-based projects. SEPs can improve public health, reduce pollution, increase environmental compliance, bring public awareness to neighborhoods most burdened by environmental harm, and increase community science capacity through monitoring.
One example of a community science SEP is the Del Amo Community Air Pollution, Noise, Vibration, and Truck Traffic Study, which is currently being implemented by the Del Amo Action Committee (DAAC). Through this SEP, DAAC installed monitors for air quality, noise and vibration measurements, and conducted truck traffic counts to help the community gain a better understanding of the sources of pollution in their neighborhood through data. DAAC will continue to analyze the data with the goal of engaging with local schools to educate the youth on air pollution in their community.
With the objective to protect public health and benefit disadvantage communities, CARB will continue to promote and facilitate the implementation of SEPs through its enforcement authority and settlement program.
