SSI Refrigerated Express, Inc. Case Settles for $31,312
SSI Refrigerated Express, Inc. will pay $31,312.00 in penalties for violating air quality regulations: $23,484.00 will go to the Air Pollution Control Fund, which provides funding for projects and research to improve California's air quality; $7,828.00 will go to the Peralta Colleges Foundation to fund emission education classes conducted by participating California community colleges, under the California Council for Diesel Education and Technology (CCDET) program. This settlement was reached in June 2016.
An investigation by the Air Resources Board (ARB) showed that SSI Refrigerated Express, Inc. failed to: (1) bring a diesel fueled Transport Refrigeration Unit (TRU) into compliance with the applicable in-use performance standards; (2) bring six of their on-road vehicles subject to the Truck and Bus (TB) regulation into compliance with the particulate matter Best Available Control Technology requirements; and (3) properly self-inspect their diesel fueled trucks to assure the trucks met state smoke emission standards. ARB documented violations as they related to the Periodic Smoke Inspection Program (PSIP), the TRU Airborne Toxic Control Measure, and the TB regulation. To settle the case, SSI Refrigerated Express, Inc. agreed to the $31,312.00 penalty and to comply with PSIP, TRU, TB, and other ARB programs.
