Optional Zero Emission Powertrain Certification

Starting with model year 2021, battery electric and hydrogen fuel-cell powertrains intended for use in incomplete medium-duty vehicles and heavy-duty vehicles may be certified in California. Other regulations may require such powertrains to certify to the requirements of “California Standards And Test Procedures For New 2021 And Subsequent Model Heavy-Duty Zero-Emission Powertrains”, but otherwise, certification of such powertrains is voluntary.

Powertrain manufacturers should divide their products into fuel cell stacks and battery packs powertrain families and subfamilies. Each certified family will receive a ZEP California Executive Order.
