The engines powering portable power equipment are significant sources of smog-forming emissions. Typically the use of this equipment is regulated by permits issued from the local air pollution control district where this equipment is used.

CARB operates the state-wide Portable Equipment Registration Program, a voluntary program for the registration of portable power equipment. WIth certain limited exceptions, portable equipment registered in this program may operate throughout the state without obtaining individual permits from local air pollution control districts.
