In 2008, CARB adopted the regulation, “Fuel Sulfur and Other Operational Requirements for Ocean-Going Vessels within California Waters and 24 Nautical Miles of the California Baseline,” which was later amended in 2011. This regulation requires the use of cleaner marine distillate fuels and reduces emissions of particulate matter, oxides of nitrogen, and sulfur oxide emissions from ocean-going vessels. These emission reductions are necessary to improve air quality and public health in California.
