Building decarbonization is a component of CARB’s strategy to achieve statewide climate goals and requires significant changes in building energy use. CARB will host a seminar on new research that assessed progress, barriers, and opportunities in California building decarbonization. The 2022 Scoping Plan found that switching buildings from utilizing polluting to clean appliances is one of the easiest and most effective ways to cut greenhouse gas emissions. Researchers from UCLA will share findings on California’s current progress with building electrification, where gaps remain, particularly in overburdened communities, and the challenges residents and businesses face—such as the capacity of electric panels and the factors that shape decisions about buildings upgrades. Researchers will also share a new framework to evaluate commercial building subsectors.
