Imperial Irrigation District Settles For $183,000
In June 2025, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) reached a settlement with the Imperial Irrigation District (IID), with its principal business office in Imperial, California, for the company’s violation of the Regulation for Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Gas-Insulated Equipment (SF6 GIE Regulation), as codified in the California Code of Regulations, title 17, section 95350 et seq.
An investigation conducted by CARB Enforcement Division (ED) staff revealed that IID exceeded the maximum annual emissions rate for Reporting Year 2021, and also failed to meet the applicable reporting requirements for Reporting Years 2021, 2022, and 2023. To settle the case, IID agreed to an average penalty of $1,968 per unit, resulting in a total settlement amount of $183,000. The full amount will be deposited into CARB’s Air Pollution Control Fund, which provides funding for projects and research to improve California's air quality. Terms of the settlement also include a requirement that IID will comply with all other CARB regulations going forward.
IID worked cooperatively with CARB staff to quickly resolve this matter. Further, they have had no prior compliance issues, and implemented additional measures to reduce the potential of any future violations.
