Coso Operating Company LLC Settles For $52,500
In July 2024, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) reached a settlement with Coso Operating Company LLC (Coso), located in Inyo County, California, for the company’s violation of the Regulation for Reducing Sulfur Hexafluoride Emissions from Gas Insulated Switchgear, renamed in 2021 as ”Regulation for Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Gas-Insulated Equipment” (SF6 GIS Regulation), as codified in the California Code of Regulations, title 17, sections 95350-95359.
CARB staff’s investigation discovered and documented that Coso exceeded the maximum allowed emissions limit of 1 percent by 2.1 percent in reporting year 2020. The total settlement amount of $52,500 settles the violations for this exceedance which was was self-disclosed by Coso. The per unit penalty is $2,500 for this settlement. Coso cooperatively worked with CARB staff to resolve this violation quickly. This settlement is in accordance with CARB’s enforcement policy. The full amount will be deposited into CARB’s Air Pollution Control Fund, which provides funding for projects and research to improve California's air quality.
