Instituto Español, S.A. Settles For $3,000
In June 2024, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) reached a settlement with Instituto Español, S.A. (IE) with its principal location in Hinojos, Spain, for the company’s violation of the Regulation for Reducing Volatile Organic Compound Emissions From Antiperspirants and Deodorants (Antiperspirant and Deodorant Regulation), as codified in the California Code of Regulations, title 17, section 94500 et seq.
CARB staff conducted an investigation that revealed IE sold, supplied, offered for sale or manufactured for use in California, a deodorant product that utilized a code to represent the date of manufacture. However, IE failed to provide an explanation of the code prior to utilizing the code (Cal. Code Regs., tit. 17, § 94504(a)(1)).
IE fully cooperated with CARB to resolve this matter. To come into compliance, IE submitted an explanation of the code to CARB. The penalty of $3,000 for failing to meet administrative requirements will be deposited into CARB’s Air Pollution Control Fund, which provides funding for projects and research to improve California’s air quality.
