Mizkan America, Inc. Settles For $861,000
In June 2023, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) reached a settlement with Mizkan America, Inc. (Mizkan), with its principal location in Mt. Prospect, Illinois, for the company’s violation of CARB’s Consumer Products Regulation, as codified in the California Code of Regulations, title 17, section 94507 et seq.
CARB Enforcement staff conducted a routine investigation revealing that Mizkan sold, supplied, offered for sale and/or manufactured for use in California general purpose cleaner (nonaerosol) products, a general purpose degreaser product, and a metal polish or cleanser product that contained a concentration of volatile organic compounds (VOC) exceeding the standard specified in the California Code of Regulations, title 17, section 94509(a) and Mizkan failed to submit an explanation of the code representing the date of manufacture, as required annually in the California Code of Regulations, title 17, section 94512(c).
Of the total settlement amount, $430,500 will be deposited into CARB’s Air Pollution Control Fund, which provides funding for projects and research to improve California's air quality. The remaining amount of $430,500 will fund the Supplemental Environmental Project (SEP) entitled Inland Empire Environmental Health and Education Connections. This SEP provides community outreach to the Inland Empire, will educate residents on respiratory health and preventative habits, and will inform them about environmental diseases affecting their region.
Mizkan fully cooperated with CARB to resolve this matter. To come into compliance, the company has modified the noncompliant products to meet Consumer Products Regulation requirements.
