Hawthorne Hydroponics LLC Settles For $172,000
In June 2022, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) reached a settlement with Hawthorne Hydroponics LLC (Hawthorne), with its principal location in Vancouver, Washington, in the amount of $172,000 for Hawthorne’s violations of CARB’s air quality regulations.
CARB staff conducted an investigation revealing that Hawthorne sold, supplied, offered for sale and/or manufactured a multi-purpose solvent for use in California containing a concentration of volatile organic compounds (VOC) exceeding the standard specified in the Consumer Products Regulation (Cal. Code Regs., tit. 17, § 94507 et. seq.). The VOC violation resulted in 8.47 tons of excess VOC emissions. In addition, the product did not display a date of manufacture on the container, which is a violation of Cal. Code Regs., tit. 17, § 94512(b).
Of the total amount, $92,922.69 will be deposited into CARB’s Air Pollution Control Fund, which provides funding for projects and research to improve California's air quality. The remaining amount of $79,077.31 will fund the Supplemental Environment Project (SEP) entitled Asthma Impact Model - Kern County Phase 2, that assists families to reduce asthma triggers.
The company fully cooperated with CARB to resolve this matter and will ensure compliance of the consumer product before resuming California sales.
