SACRAMENTO - Air Resources Board Chairman Mary D. Nichols today issued the following statement concerning today’s release of proposed U.S. EPA power plant regulations:
“The proposed rules bring some of the same economic and environmental benefits California has enjoyed from improved energy efficiency and cleaner low-carbon energy to the rest of the country,” said Chairman Nichols.
“We are committed to building on our successful programs to reach and exceed the federal targets. We look forward to working with other states, including Oregon and Washington, in a regional approach to take action to cut carbon pollution and promote the cleanest sources of energy.”
California’s AB 32 greenhouse gas emission reduction programs cover most sectors of the state’s economy, with the goal of lowering those emissions to 1990 levels by 2020. The recently released AB 32 Scoping Plan examines how the state can continue to reduce emissions beyond that date, with a 2050 target of an additional 80 percent reduction by 2050.
