Western Power Sports, Inc. Case Settles for $257,000
Western Power Sports, Inc. (WPS), an Idaho-based distributor of on- and off-road aftermarket performance parts, agreed to settle its case with the California Air Resources Board (CARB) in September 2017 involving the sale of illegal add-on and modified parts in the state for installation on motorcycles, dirt bikes, all-terrain vehicles, and personal watercraft during calendar years 2011 through 2013. These parts needed to be exempted from California’s anti-tampering laws before they could be sold, but were not consequently evaluated by CARB in order to demonstrate emissions compliance.
WPS cooperated with CARB during the agency’s investigation, and provided all needed information as requested. The resulting settlement requires the company to pay a total civil penalty $257,000, with $64,250 of it being directed toward a Supplemental Environmental Project that will help fund the installation of filtration systems in local California schools especially impacted by air pollution.
