San Diego Gas & Electric Company Settles For $239,200
In October 2024, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) reached a settlement with San Diego Gas & Electric Company (SDG&E), located in San Diego, California, for SDG&E’s violation of the Regulation for Reducing Sulfur Hexafluoride Emissions from Gas Insulated Switchgear (SF6 GIS Regulation), as codified in California Code of Regulations, title 17, section 95350 et seq.
An investigation conducted by CARB staff documented that SDG&E failed to file accurate reports for reporting years 2020, 2021, and 2022. SDG&E agreed to a penalty of approximately $714 per day for the violations, resulting in a total settlement of $239,200. The per unit penalty was reduced from statutory maximums. SDG&E fully cooperated with CARB to resolve this matter.
The civil penalty portionof $119,600 will be deposited into CARB’s Air Pollution Control Fund, which provides funding for projects and research to improve California's air quality. The remaining amount of $119,600 will fund a Supplemental Environmental Project (SEP) entitled, El Sol Environmental Community Health Worker Learning Hub (the Hub), with the El Sol Neighborhood Education Center. The Hub aims to provide additional resources and knowledge to community health workers and community-based organizations by educating them about climate change, environmental health, environmental education, and capacity building in modules.
