Woodsmoke, resulting from wood burned for heat and recreational purposes in fireplaces, wood stoves, inserts, and similar devices can contribute to poor air quality. In many communities throughout the State, woodsmoke from older residential heating devices is a major source of air pollution. Replacing these highly polluting and inefficient devices with certified wood stoves or non-wood home heating devices can significantly reduce emissions of fine particulate matter (PM2.5), black carbon, toxic air contaminants, and greenhouse gas emissions.
