REUSE INFRASTRUCTURE to be added as measure #3 under the Waste Section of the Priority Climate Action Plan

We are writing to advocate for REUSE INFRASTRUCTURE to be added as measure #3 under the Waste Section of the Priority Climate Action Plan. There are many more sectors that require significant investment to move us closer to a Circular Economy. For example the EPA has found that reclaimed lumber uses 1/11th the amount of energy to process compared to virgin lumber. This massive reduction is because reclaimed lumber does not need to be dried in gas powered kilns. Also reclaimed lumber is sourced for metropolitan areas and reused in metropolitan areas. This results in a dramatic reduction in air pollution from rail and truck transportation. Reusing existing materials that are already close to the point of consumption is a massive energy saver and reduce air pollution. The most sustainable material is one that already exists.

CARB recently invested in a wood reuse calculator. Let's update it and put it to use by developing and funding programs that can produce data. Per ton, the Environmental Protection Agency Warm calculator shows that wood reuse reduces MTCOE by a factor of 2 over landfilling and over a factor of 3 from combustion. In order to move wood reuse from being performed by small businesses to large-scale operations that can handle a higher % of the wood waste stream, we must invest in innovative businesses willing to scale to the next level.

Please add REUSE INFRASTRUCTURE as part of measure #3. Promoting Reuse is required for us to meet our climate goals and must be added now, not down the road.

Thank you
Eric
