Porsche Resolves Gasoline Emission Issues For $5,876,338
Dr. Ing. h. c. F. Porsche AG and subsidiary Porsche Cars North America, Inc. (collectively “Porsche”), the German sports car manufacturer, settled several emissions‑related issues with the California Air Resources Board (CARB) in September 2019. Over the course of 2016 and early 2017, Porsche submitted a number of self‑disclosures to CARB involving noncompliance of some of its 2014 through 2017 model year gasoline vehicles with both emissions certification and on-board diagnostic system requirements. These included implementation of unapproved vehicle modifications, the use of incorrect testing procedures, and the submittal of incorrect test data. Porsche worked cooperatively throughout CARB’s investigation, and was expedient in providing all needed information to determine the extent of the subject issues.
These violations affected over 23,000 Porsche gasoline vehicles in California, including the Cayenne, Boxster, and Panamera. As part of its settlement with CARB, Porsche agreed to pay $2,929,470 of the $5,876,338 total penalty to two Supplemental Environmental Projects that fund the installation of high-performance air filtration systems in multiple California school districts greatly impacted by pollution. The remainder will be paid to California’s Air Pollution Control Fund. Porsche also agreed to extend the emissions warranty of the cooling fan on certain 2014 model year Panameras to ensure continued emissions compliance.
