Recreational Vehicles & Watercraft

Recreational vehicles such as all-terrain vehicles and dune buggies, as well as jet skis, speed boats and other watercraft contribute significantly to smog-forming emissions even though they are not operated very frequently. This is because they do not have the same emissions controls as today's cars and trucks, particularly systems that control evaporating fuel vapors, an especially strong smog-forming pollutant. As a result, a dune buggy emits far more raw fuel, a smog-forming pollutant, from evaporation than the car it is parked next to in the garage.

California has been a leader in developing controls to help reduce pollution from recreational vehicles both where they are used and where they are stored.
