The California Air Resources Board (CARB) will be holding a research seminar on Understanding the Sources and Formation Regimes of Present-Day PM_2.5 to Mitigate Particulate Pollution in California.

Background

California continues to face air quality challenges, especially with fine particulate matter (PM_2.5), which consists of very small particles in the air that can be inhaled deep into the lungs and affect health. Better understanding where PM_2.5 comes from and how it forms is important for developing effective policies. This is particularly important as new policies continue to change how different sources contribute to PM_2.5 levels. CARB funded this research project (CARB Contract 21RD010) to better understand the sources of present-day PM_2.5 and the conditions that influence its formation in different parts of the state, including communities with higher levels of air pollution. This scientific knowledge will help inform and strengthen CARB’s clean air policies over time.
